Working at the intersection of 20th century collage practice and ancient shadow play, Jens Fänge developed a surrealist matryoshka-like aesthetic, which consists of
combining pictures within paintings. As a master of eclecticism, composite construction includes structures of all genres, rendering iconic portraits, still lifes, home interiors, cityscapes and landscapes juxtaposing geometric abstractions and using a variety of mediums. and materials such as oil paint, pencil, vinyl, cardboard and fabric on the panel. The contoured, often truncated protagonists of the artist's elaborate pictorial plays seem to resemble these immersive overlapping layers of scene-like display, giving rise to an intricate, operating endless labyrinth of usage ranges.
